A Famous centenarians (百岁老人) still active in arts, science are in no mood to retire. "Those who stand still, die," is one of Oliveira's favorite phrases. He knows from experience what it means, as the Portuguese film director has reached the age of 102 and is still active in his profession. Every year, Oliveira shoots a film and is currently working on his next project. "You have to work, work, work in order to forget that death is not far away," he said. When asked about his age, Oliveira said with some humility: "It's down to mother nature. It gave to me what it took from others." Being both mentally and physically fit in old age is partly a matter of luck, but it also has something to do with character. Not every white-haired person is wise and social skills, openness and the ability to train the brain are essential for senior citizens. Along with the architect Oscar Niemeyer (103), Nobel laureate Montalcini (101) and director Kurt Maetzig (100), Oliveira is one of those people of whom it would be very wrong to think as members of a listless elderly generation. Another master in his profession is the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The 103-year-old Brazilian is best known for his futuristic-looking buildings in Brasilia, but he also speaks out on behalf of the poor. "The role of the architect is to struggle for a better world where we can develop a form of architecture that serves everyone and not just a privileged few," said Niemeyer recently. He spends almost every day working in his office in Copacabana, and even when he falls ill he keeps working on ideas: After a gallbladder (胆囊) operation he composed a samba tune (桑巴舞曲) in the clinic. Another man who could sing a song about age is 107-year-old Heesters. The Dutch-born opera singer spent most of his life performing in Germany, where he still works. Recently Heesters said: "I want to be at least 108-years-old." He also plans to keep performing. "Should I just sit at home and wait until they come and pick me up?" Heesters has not given up trying to add to his tally of awards and is looking for a "good stage role". Italian scientist Rita Levi-Montalcini, who is 101-year-old and is still active in medical science, has described the force that keeps driving her on: "Progress is created through imperfection." In 1986 she and her lab colleague were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work on nerve growth factor. She's convinced that humans grow on challenges. With so many brilliant examples given, we can see clearly that age is no barrier to some high achievers. 41. From the first two paragraphs, we can see ______. A. being active at 102 is achievable for everybody B. Oliveira owes his long life to his mother’s help C. being fit in old age is a matter of luck and character D. social skills and wisdom are difficult for the senior

  命题意图:推理判断题,根据文章细节判断说话意图

  44. In the passage so many examples were given to show ________.

  A. old age is a big problem if you want to succeed

A third of primary schoolchildren in China are suffering from psychological ill-health as a result of classroom stress and parental pressure, according to a study published on Tuesday.

The problem is so bad that urgent measures are needed, warns the study, led by British and Chinese researchers.

The investigation surveyed 2,191 pupils aged nine to 12 in nine schools in urban and rural Zhejiang, a relatively prosperous coastal province in eastern China.

Eighty-one percent of the youngsters said they worried "a lot" about exams, 63 percent feared being punished by their teacher, 44 percent had been physically bullied at least sometimes – with boys likelier to be victims than girls – and 73 percent had been physically punished by their parents.

Most of the children complained they struggled to cope with the amount of homework they were assigned.

Over one-third reported headaches or abdominal pains – psychosomatic symptoms of stress – at least once a week. The most stressed children reported incidence of aches or pains of four times a week.

The investigation, led by Therese Hesketh, a professor at University College London (UCL) Centre for International Health and Development, pointed the finger at extreme competitiveness in China's education system, from the onset of primary school.

“The competitive and punitive educational environment leads to high levels of stress and psychosomatic symptoms," the authors say.

“Measures to reduce unnecessary stress on children in schools should be introduced urgently."

The paper appears in Archives of Disease in Childhood, a peer-reviewed journal of the British Medical Association (BMA).

The "urban" setting for the study was Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang, while the "rural" setting was a poor county in Quzhou prefecture, in the west of the province.

The study highlights some of the complexities that, it says, explain the demands for academic excellence and intolerance of failure.

One factor is the country's dramatic rise in prosperity, which has created "previously unheard-off possibilities for upward mobility" and in turn stoked pressures on children to do well at school.

Other reasons are China's one-child policy and the Confucian traditions of respect for parents and elders, filial piety, obedience and discipline.

“The aspirations of many parents, who had limited educational opportunities themselves are now invested in their only children," it says.

Previous studies on school-related stress and its impact on health are few and generally come from Scandinavia.

A 2008 assessment among 10- to 13-year-old in Sweden found that 21 percent of boys of 30 percent of girls experienced headache, and 17 percent of boys and 28 percent of girls experienced abdominal pain at least once per week.

  46. What mainly caused schoolchildren to suffer from psychological ill-health?

  A. Competitiveness in education system

  B. Classroom stress and parental pressure

  C. Physical punishment from their parents

  D. Endless homework from school teachers

  命题意图:细节题

  A. bullying behavior at school

  B. many examinations at school

  C. physical punishment by parents

  D. physical punishment by teachers

  命题意图:细节题

  49. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. More and more schoolchildren will drop out of school soon

  B. Homework and examinations will be cancelled at all schools

  C. Parents and teachers will give up educating the schoolchildren

  D. Too much stress does great harm to schoolchildren physically and mentally

  命题意图:事实询问题

  50. What is the main idea of the passage?

  A. Children in China sickened by school pressure

  B. Measures to reduce unnecessary stress on children

  C. The investigation, led by University College London

  D. Extreme competitiveness in China’s education system

Faced with a life-changing tragedy, it would be easy for Martha Clements to focus on the negative. But that’s not her way. Five years after losing her vision, Clements is back doing what she loves.

“It is long, Kathy,” Clements says, running her hands down the length of her client’s hair. Kathy Braga is letting it grow. It now hangs below her shoulders and down her back, and all she wants is a trim(修剪), so she asks Clements to show her how much an inch would be. Clements pulls a ruler from a drawer and holds it up to Braga’s hair in front near her face. “Right here. An inch will be right here at your chin.”

Clements was in this career for about 10 years before losing her vision. Now, when she begins cutting, it’s easy to forget that Clements is completely blind. She carefully compares the length of each strand of hair. Though confident of her sense of touch, she at times asks her client to be her eyes and check her work.

After a careful inspection, Braga gives her approval. And after Clements blows her hair dry, she remarks, “You made me younger. I love it.”

Clements had been doing Braga’s hair for years before she became blind. Braga is proud to say she was Clements’ first customer after she lost her vision.

“She sat me in the kitchen. It was dark, and she said ,’ Are you ready?’ I said, ‘I’m ready.’ And that is when she took this thing, and she said, ‘ Look and see if there is hair on the ground,’ and I said ,’ Yes, there is .’ And she said, ‘Okay, I have the right end of the thing.”

Clements was 42 years old when she suffered a pulmonary embolism (肺栓塞) that cost her sight. “I was dead for 20 minutes first and then half an hour, and the lack of oxygen killed my optical(视觉的) nerve.” The last thing Clements remembered that day was the ambulance coming to get her. “I couldn’t breathe. The next thing I remembered was waking up three days later, blind, in the hospital.”

Her ribs(肋骨)had been broken, when they treated her. Her shoulder was dislocated. She had to undergo nine months of physical treatment.

“It was the hardest time in my life,” she says. “Everything changed in my life: distance, smell, and sound. My kids didn’t sound the same. My husband didn’t sound the same too. I didn’t know my home. It took me three months to find the coffee table.”

Once a month, a teacher from the Virginia Center for the Blind came to her home in Woodbridge, about 40 kilometers from Washington. But Clements was eager to learn more. So in 2008, she left her husband and sons, to go to the Virginia School for the Blind in Richmond for a nine-month program. “My plan was to be able to do for my family again, to do what I like to do, cook, clean, make phone calls.”

She learned basic skills like how to walk with a cane, how to listen and how to eat different foods. There were classes in Braille, computer skills and using different gadgets designed for the blind. Graduates of the program are expected to leave with not only life skills, but a marketable skill as well.

“My teacher asked me why I wouldn’t do hair. I said, ‘ Hello. Blind. No, no, no.’ I was scared to think I could even do it.”

But gradually, Clements gained confidence and by the time she graduated, had styled 100 heads of hair at the school. “People from headquarters came, people from the library, students, secretaries, teachers, and friends came. Everybody came and let me do their hair,” Clements says.

Three days a week she leaves home to volunteer at the House of Mercy, a Catholic service organization that provides clothing, food and other support to the poor.

Kellie Ross, executive director of the House of Mercy, remembered when Clements first showed up with her friend, Kathy Braga, to offer her help.

At first, she had no idea Clements was blind. “As she started to walk I realized she couldn’t see, ” Ross recalls. “She could have taken that tragic experience of losing her sight and gone inward, but instead she used that experience to help other people who are suffering.”

Clements says she feels blessed to day, five years after her brush with death. “I thank the Lord every day for my blindness, because I’m alive,” she says. “I could have been dead. I’m alive. I’m healthy, and that is what matters.”

A few years ago my sister moved from her home in Alabama to Buffalo, New York. Since moving to Buffalo she’s become a big hockey fan and has encouraged me to start watching it. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to find hockey on television here in Alabama. Since hockey games don’t air very much on television I’ve had to look for different ways to watch hockey games.

I often see websites that claim if you go to their website you can watch television on your computer. I try out many of these websites hoping that one of the television stations is a northern station that airs hockey games. Unfortunately, most of them don’t work. Either the site doesn’t really give you what they advertise or their video player doesn’t work properly. But finally I’ve found one websites that actually works.

Free Tube is a site that you can go to and watch Television online for free. You don’t have to download any kind special software or pay money or even sign up for anything. All you have to do is go to Free Tube, choose your channel and start watching.

The different channels to choose from are separated into different categories like news, business, entertainment, music and sports. You’re not going to find channels like NBC or ABC so you can watch the latest episode of Heroes or Grey’s Anatomy but it does include some popular channels like Cartoon Network and ESPN.

There is also a movie section. Each move channel airs different sorts of films like adventure, classics, comedy or horror and that channel will always air that kind of movies. The movie section also includes my favorite station called Maxx Trailers (预告片). Maxx Trailers airs nothing but movies trailers 24 hours a day. Some of the trailers are for movies coming out and some are for movies that have already been released but already released movies don’t go back farther than a couple of months.

So far I haven’t had any problems with Free Tube’s video player either. Whenever I choose a channel the video almost always works and usually loads every quickly. The only problem I have with Free Tube is that there is currently a glitch if you’re using Firefox. Once you choose a channel you can’t select another channel to change to, your web browser will freeze up. So if you’re using Firefox the only way to switch channels is to leave the site and re-enter the site, when choose what channel you want to go to. However, Free Tube is aware of this glitch and is working with Mozilla to get it fixed right away.

If you’re missing some show everyone is talking about like Grey’s Anatomy or Heroes this isn’t really a solution for that. But Free Tube is a good way to find channels that you weren’t aware of; there are several good stations to be found.

  56. The author mainly ________ in this passage.
